FBI Smishing Warning: That Text Demanding a Toll Payment is Likely a Scam

Keep your guard up out there…

Be skeptical if you get a text message that says you have unpaid tolls. These texts may contain a link to a website where you enter payment information that goes straight to the scammers.

“Smishing” Definition: A social engineering attack using fake text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals. “Smishing” combines “SMS” — or “short message service” — and “phishing.” Phishing generally pertains to attacks on the Internet, email, or websites.
