Still Think it Can’t Happen to You? Sheriff’s Office in MD County Loses 5 Years of Records

After a virus crashed its computer system in April, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is still scrambling to recover as many of its files as possible.

The department lost its records from 2006 to 2011. The lost files include all incident reports during the five-year period. “We don’t know where the virus came from,” said the Chief Deputy. “We get emails from everywhere.”

The importance of backing up data cannot be stressed enough. This should include backing up phone system databases, as well as switch and router configurations. If this could happen to the Sheriff’s Office, it could happen to your business.
